Intent

At Beckstone, our core aim is to foster lifelong learners, who are confident, curious and resilient. We aim to sow the seeds of curiosity, ensuring that each day has a spark of magic that creates wonder and awe for the children. We aim to nurture children into confident independent learners who are creative, imaginative and excellent problem solvers. As a result, our indoor and outdoor provision is carefully planned and adapted to create the perfect learning environments for play based learning.

Implementation

Beckstone’s curriculum has been shaped with respect to the overarching principles:

  • Every child is a unique child, who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured,
  • Children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships,
  • Children learn and develop well in enabling environments, in which their experiences respond to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership between practitioners and parents and/or carers.

We offer an exciting, ambitious curriculum that has opportunities for children to follow their own interests. Young children learn from everything around them – people, the environment, the atmosphere, routines, experiences and opportunities. All of these elements of the Early Years make up Beckstone’s Early Years Curriculum and allow us to carefully adapt to the core needs of the cohort. High levels of parental communication are now in place and have bridged the pathways between home and school.

At the heart of our curriculum, we offer a balance of adult-led provision and child-led learning. Balancing these approaches allows us to use enhancements carefully to ensure that our children have the best opportunities to thrive at school. It also allows us to carefully consider how we are providing the right support and challenge in relation to the Early Years areas of learning, as defined by England's Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

The three prime areas – Communication and Language, Personal, Social and Emotional Development, and Physical Development – which are crucial for young children's curiosity, enthusiasm, and overall development.

The four specific areas: Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World, and Expressive Arts and Design.

Impact

As a consequence of our Early Years offer, we see wonderful growth in children’s social, personal, social and emotional development, behaviour, routines and readiness for learning in KS1. Our prioritisation for the development of early language and reading allows children to close the disadvantaged gap and prepares them brilliantly for their journey through the main school and our outcomes are steadily rising.

To fully enhance learning in all parts of a child’s life we have worked hard to improve consistency across our whole unit and with our parental communication. The impact of our strengthened communication with parents has allowed us to link home and school experiences brilliantly and we are receiving feedback that support has been ‘Life changing’.

We are extremely proud of the impact of our Early Years offer.
