We carried out another science investigation to find out if all big things sank and small things floated!

We used different sized balls, dice and some odd shaped items too, like the knights helmet and a skittle, we also used a marble.

All the children made predictions about what would float and sink then placed them in the water tray.

Some children were surprised when the larger items floated.

They were even more surprised when the smallest item, the marble sank!

We all talked about why we thought this had happened and we worked out it was the material the objects were made out of plastic, rubber.

The children decided that these materials are lighter than metal and that is why they float.

They also worked out that the marble was made of glass so that was heavier that plastic or rubber and that is why it sank.

I think it might be interesting for the children to try this experiment at home using plastic and rubber objects that do sink!

That would test their scientific thinking.

At the end of the session Mrs Pike asked the children if they had learnt anything new.

This is what the children said;

Octavia - 'wood doesn't sink.'

 Khyra - 'glass sinks.'

 Alex - 'how things float.'

 Shay - 'glass sinks.'

 George - 'rubber floats.'

 Aiden - 'balls float.'

 Oliver - rubber is light.'

Ruby-Lei - 'some materials float and glass sinks.'

 Keegan - 'balls float.'

Kian - 'balls are light and made of plastic, that cube over there.'
 (pointing to the dice)

Lewis - 'plastic in the dice.'

 Jake - 'plastic floats.' (helmet)

Some friends are still having a think about it.

Our next science investigation is about ice.
