World War 2 Rationing

Through research we have discovered that:

* Before the second world war began, Britain imported about 55 million tons of food from many different countries every year.

* When war began in September 1939 this importing was stopped because the ships were being torpedoed by German submarines.

* Rationing was introduced in January 1940 as there was a worry that there would be a shortage of food supplies.

* Bacon, butter and sugar were the first foods to be rationed, followed by others such as meat, eggs, cheese and milk. Potatoes and fish were not rationed.

* People were encouraged to 'dig for victory' and allotments became the latest 'must have'.

Mrs Suitor created a ration display in the classroom and we all got to touch, smell, see and taste some of the foods in short supply during and after the war years.
