Windrush Child Poetry

The children watched a video of John Agard reading his poem ‘Windrush Child’. The children took note as to how he used his voice to bring the audience in to the performance.

The children were provided with a copy of the 'Windrush Child' poem. We watched the video again and this time used the following key to highlight where he uses emphasis in his voice:

• Underline for the strong words.
• Dott or an underline for quiet or whispered words.
• A triangle for loud words.
• An arrow for extended words.

The children had time to practise reading the poem aloud, then it was time for the performances! The children were all able to constructively critique each other - all the performances were great!
